Mangalore (măng-gəlôr`), city (1991 pop. 273,000), Karnataka state, SW India, on the Arabian Sea. A port, it trades in spices, rice, fish, nuts, and cardamom. Manufactures include roofing tiles, pottery, brick kilns, and ships. The city has an airport, major road and rail connections, and a diesel power station. It was the capital (13th cent.) of the Alupa kingdom. In the late 18th cent., Mangalore was an important shipbuilding center. The British occupied the city in 1799.

Mangalore 

a city and port in southern India, on the Arabian Sea, in the state of Karnataka (Mysore). Population, 214,000 (1971). Industry includes the production of ceramics (primarily tile), hand weaving, and the primary processing of coffee and other agricultural raw materials. There is a chemical fertilizer plant in the city. Most of India’s coffee intended for export is shipped through Mangalore, as are cashew nuts, tea, pepper, and sandal wood.
