Currently the fourth-largest group of medications prescribed in the United States, atypical antipsychotics are approved for the treatment of symptoms of schizophrenia and the acute manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder in adults and for symptoms of irritability associated with autism in children.
More than half of those also suffered from a major episode of depression along with the usual manic episodes of euphoria or unusual cheerfulness associated with the disorder, which usually manifests itself at the age of 19 years or slightly younger.
The illness sent Ian, then 25, and his parents into emotional upheaval as he endured two serious car accidents during manic episodes and three trips to a psychiatric hospital.
