On the northwest coast of MI, bordered on west by Lake Michigan; established Apr 1, 1840. Name Origin: For the Manistee River, which runs through it; from an Ojibway word possibly meaning 'sound of the winds,' 'lost river,' 'spirit of the woods,' 'crooked river,' or 'red river.'

Area (sq mi): 1280.77 (land 543.61; water 737.16). Pop per sq mi: 46.40.
Pop 2005: 25,226. State rank: 58. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.80%; 1990-2000 15.30%. Pop 2000: 24,527 (White 92.90%; Black or African American 1.60%; Hispanic or Latino 2.60%; Asian 0.30%; Other 3.80%). Foreign born: 1.30%. Median age: 41.50.
Income 2000: per capita $17,204; median household $34,208; Pop below poverty level: 10.30%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,881-$22,775.
Unemployment 2004: 8.70%. Change from 2000: 1.60%. Median travel time to work: 20.90 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 20.80%.
