Maniushis, Iosif Antonovich 

Born Dec. 12 (25), 1910, in the village of Mal’kovka, in present-day Mstislavl’ Raion, Byelorussian SSR. Soviet statesman and party figure, doctor of economics (1970). Became a member of the CPSU in 1945. The son of a peasant.

Maniushis graduated from the V. V. Kuibyshev Leningrad Highway Institute in 1938. From 1938 to 1941 he worked as an engineer in Kiev, Berdichev, and Leningrad. In the Soviet Army from 1941 to 1944, he fought in the Great Patriotic War. From 1944 to 1947 he was chariman of a city planning commission and deputy chairman of the Vilnius city executive committee. He was chairman of the Kaunas city executive committee from 1947 to 1950. From 1950 to 1954 he was minister of construction of the Lithuanian SSR, serving as minister of city and rural construction in 1954-55. From 1955 to 1967 he was secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania. Since April 1967 he has been chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Lithuanian SSR. He is a member of the Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania.

At the Twenty-fourth Congress (1971) and the Twenty-fifth Congress (1976) of the party, Maniushis was elected a candidate member of the Central Committee of the CPSU. He was a deputy to the sixth through ninth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, four other orders, and medals.
