Manlius Capitolinus, Marcus
Roman military leader; consul in 392 B.C.; patrician. Only unreliable and fragmentary information from Roman tradition has been preserved concerning Manlius Capitolinus. He commanded Roman troops in a war against the equites (392 B.C.); he saved the Capitol from the Gauls (387, hence his nick-name Capitolinus); and in 384 he defended the plebeians against debt slavery, was accused by the patricians of striving to establish tyranny, and was executed (384 B.C.).
