Manoilo, Nikolai Fedorovich 

Born Dec. 8, 1927, at the khutor (hamlet) of Manily, Kharkov Oblast. Soviet Ukrainian baritone. People’s Artist of the USSR (1976). Member of the CPSU since 1973.

In 1960, Manoilo graduated from the Kharkov Conservatory, where he had studied voice with P. B. Golubev. He became a soloist with the Kharkov Theater of Opera and Ballet in 1958. Manoilo’s operatic roles have included the Prince in Tchaikovsky’s The Sorceress, the title role in Rubinstein’s The Demon, Scarpia in Puccini’s Tosca, and Rigoletto and Iago in Verdi’s Rigoletto and Otello, respectively. Among his other roles have been Ostap in Lysenko’s Taras Bul’ba and Gubanov in Klebanov’s The Communist. He has performed abroad.

A deputy to the ninth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR, Manoilo has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and various medals.
