Manteuffel, Edwin, Freiherr von (ĕt`vēn frī`hĕr fən män`toifəl), 1809–85, Prussian field marshal. He served in the Danish War (1864) and was appointed Prussian governor in conquered Schleswig. In the Austro-Prussian War Austro-Prussian War or Seven Weeks War, June 15–Aug. 23, 1866, between Prussia, allied with Italy, and Austria, seconded by Bavaria, Württemberg, Saxony, Hanover, Baden, and several smaller German states.

 of 1866 he commanded brilliantly, and in the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71) he distinguished himself. Manteuffel commanded (1871–73) the German army of occupation in France and from 1879 until his death was governor of Alsace-Lorraine.
