Manteuffel, Tadeusz 

(T. Manteuffel-Szoege). Born Mar. 5, 1902, in Rezhitsa, present-day Rezekne, Latvia; died Sept. 22, 1970, in Warsaw. Polish medievalist. Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences from 1952.

Manteuffel graduated from the University of Warsaw in 1924, where he was appointed a decent in 1930. During the fascist occupation of Poland from 1939 to 1945 he headed the history section of the underground university in Warsaw. In 1945 he became a professor at the University of Warsaw and organized the History Institute, which he headed until 1955. From 1953 to 1970 he was director of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences. His research was devoted to the Catholic religious orders in the 11th and 12th centuries and the origin of medieval heresies.
