a mountain massif in Brazil, located west of Rio de Janeiro in the Brazilian Highlands. Composed of crystalline and metamorphic rocks, the Serra da Man-tiqueira rises to an elevation of 2,787 m at Mount Itatiaia (Mount Agulhas Negras), falls steeply in the southeast to the wide valley of the Paraiba River basin. The western slopes are more gentle and deeply dissected. Tropical rain forests grow on the slopes.
