manufacturing

Any industry that makes products from raw materials by the use of manual labour or machines and that is usually carried out systematically with a division of labour. In a more limited sense, manufacturing is the fabrication or assembly of components into finished products on a fairly large scale. Among the most important manufacturing industries are those that produce aircraft, automobiles, chemicals, clothing, computers, consumer electronics, electrical equipment, furniture, heavy machinery, refined petroleum products, ships, steel, and tools. See also factory; mass production.

Has it not occurred to the New Labour administration, that should we let our core manufacturing industries wither away during this recession they will no longer be there to take advantage of the eventual world recovery, allowing those still in existence abroad to charge us whatever they like for their products.
One way around this problem could be to offer sufficiently attractive financial packages to people in the countries where once British manufacturing industries have been allowed to go in order to entice the ones with the required knowledge to come to Britain to deliver high quality training (something that has already happened in much of top-class sport) I hope I am wrong about the second paragraph, only time will tell.
There are other two significant manufacturing industries, which share a major part of US economy.
