 (also known as Maranhão). Agriculture and livestock remain central to the economy of the region, which has been the site of major agricultural and industrial colonization projects since the 1970s. Industries now include steel manufacture and food processing. Brazil operates a satellite launch facility at Alcântara in N Maranhão. Maranhão had long been inhabited by the Tupinambás when the Portuguese established the first European settlement there in 1534.

a state in northeastern Brazil. Area, 328,700 sq km. Population, 3 million (1970). The administrative center is São Luís. Maranhao occupies the northern slopes of the Brazilian Highlands, which are covered with savannas, and a coastal lowland with equatorial rain forests. The economy is based on land cultivation and cattle-raising, with land cultivation being the main branch. Long-staple cotton, sugarcane, cocoa, and coffee are grown on plantations. In the valleys of the main rivers the fruit of the babassu palm (82 percent of the country’s harvest in 1970) and the wax of the carnauba palm are gathered. Live-stock is raised in the savannas; in 1970 there were 2.3 million head of cattle, 800,000 goats, and 3.9 million hogs. Maranhao also has cotton and sugar industries. Seaports include São Luís and Icatu.
