In central WI, east of Eau Claire; organized Feb 9, 1850 from Portage County. Name Origin: For the site of the famous battle in Greece (490 B.C.).

Area (sq mi): 1576.14 (land 1544.96; water 31.18). Pop per sq mi: 83.50.
Pop 2005: 128,941. State rank: 10. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.50%; 1990-2000 9.00%. Pop 2000: 125,834 (White 93.40%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 0.80%; Asian 4.50%; Other 1.30%). Foreign born: 3.50%. Median age: 36.30.
Income 2000: per capita $20,703; median household $45,165; Pop below poverty level: 6.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $27,244-$29,992.

    AP) -- The poor economy has organizers scaling back plans for a dairy school in Marathon County in central Wisconsin.
    ABOUT MARATHON COUNTY Located in north central Wisconsin, Marathon County is geographically the largest county in Wisconsin, with a population of about 134,000.
    The board decision comes on the heels of the Marathon County and the town of Mosinee granting easements, the Department of Natural Resources issuing the necessary permits, the Dane County Circuit Court re-affirming the PSC's decision to approve the project, the National Park Service selection of the overhead crossing of the Namekagon and the Washburn County Board agreement to negotiate.
