Maratti or Maratta, Carlo (kär`lō märät`tē, –tä), 1625–1713, Italian high baroque painter and engraver of the Roman school. He restored Raphael's frescoes in the Vatican and was appointed curator of the Vatican paintings. Maratti created a number of allegorical pictures in which he attempted to reconcile the baroque and classical trends. An example is the ceiling fresco The Triumph of Clemency (Altieri Palace, Rome).
