Margules, Max

Born Apr. 23, 1856, in Brody, Galicia, now in the Ukrainian SSR; died Oct. 4, 1920, in Perchtoldsdorf, near Vienna. Austrian meteorologist.

Margules studied in Vienna from 1872 to 1876 and in Berlin from 1879 to 1880. He worked at the Austrian Meteorological Institute between 1877 and 1879 and between 1882 and 1906. His principal works deal with dynamic meteorology. Margules showed that cyclones form basically as a result of the unstable position of air masses in the atmosphere. He formulated the conditions for a stable boundary surface between two air masses.
