Mari, Nikolai Nikolaevich 

Born Dec. 25, 1858, in Kazan; died June 31, 1921, in Novocherkassk. Soviet veterinary pathologist, epizootiologist, and bacteriologist.

Upon graduating in 1881 from the Kazan Veterinary Institute, Mari participated in the elimination of rinderpest in Kazan Province. In 1891 he became an assistant professor in the chair of general pathology, pathologic anatomy, and histology at the Warsaw Veterinary Institute. In 1902 he became a professor at the Military Medical Academy, and in 1919 rector of the Don (Novocherkassk) Veterinary Institute. He worked on the problem of “meat poisoning” and rules for grading meat products; he was the first in Russia to write a textbook on veterinary-sanitary inspection (1912).
