Marianus Scotus, 1028–c.1082, Irish monk and chronicler

Marianus Scotus (mărēā`nəs skō`təs), 1028–c.1082, Irish monk and chronicler, whose Gaelic name was Mael-brigte. He left Ireland in 1056 and lived on the Continent until his death. His chronicle of the world from the creation until 1082 was much used in the Middle Ages, notably by Florence of Worcester and Sigebert of Gembloux.

Marianus Scotus, d. 1088, Irish churchman

Marianus Scotus, d. 1088, Irish churchman, whose Gaelic name was Muiredach. He left Ireland in 1067 on a pilgrimage to Rome but settled permanently at Regensburg (Ratisbon), Germany, where he became abbot. He was famous for his calligraphic copies of parts of the Bible, which were usually accompanied by his commentaries.
