Maribor (mä`rĭbôr), Ger. Marburg, city (1991 pop. 103,961), in Slovenia, on the Drava River. It is a heavy industrial center with chemical, engineering, and electrical industries. Known as early as the 12th cent., it was an important city of Styria Styria , Ger. Steiermark , province (1991 pop. 1,184,593), 6,324 sq mi (16,379 sq km), central and SE Austria. Graz is the capital. Bordering on Slovenia in the south, Styria is predominately mountainous, with many forests, pastures, and meadowlands.

 until its transfer (1919) to Yugoslavia and incorporation into the constituent republic of Slovenia. The city has a 12th-century Gothic cathedral, a 15th-century castle, and a fine Renaissance town hall.

Maribor 

a city in Yugoslavia, in the Socialist Republic of Slovenia on the Drava River. Population, 79,000 (1971). It is an important railroad and highway junction. The leading industrial sectors are machine building and metalworking (trucks and buses, railroad cars, electrical products, farm machinery, metal-ware); these enterprises account for half of the value of Maribor’s industrial output. The city also has textile (cotton, wool, and silk) and chemical industries as well as wood-products, leather, ceramics, and food-processing enterprises. There is a series of hydroelectric power plants on the Drava River above Maribor.
