In south-central AZ; organized Feb 14, 1871 (prior to statehood) from Yavapai and Yuma counties. Name Origin: From the name of an Indian tribe of Yuman linguistic stock. The name may be a variant of the spanish mariposa, or 'butterfly,' as the Spanish found the tribe wearing bright paints. The tribe called itself Pipatsje, 'people.'
