Mariehamn (märē`əhämn') or Maarianhamina (mä`rēänhä'mĭnä), city (1996 pop. 10,399), capital of Åland Åland Islands or Ahvenanmaa Islands , Swed. Ålandsöerna , archipelago (1996 pop. 25,257), 581 sq mi (1,505 sq km), in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland, at the entrance of the Gulf of Bothnia.

Mariehamn a city in SW Finland, chief port of the ?land Islands. Pop.: 10 693 (2004 est.) Mariehamn (Maarianhamina), the main city and a port in the Aland Islands (Finland); located on the southern coast of Aland Island. Population, 8,500 (1970). It is a shipping center and is linked by ferry with Turku and Stockholm (Sweden). It is also a fishing center, with ship-building and food-processing industries. Mariehamn is a tourist site.
