Marija Ružicka-Strozzi

Ružička-Strozzi, Marija 

Born Aug. 3, 1850, in Lito-vel, Moravia; died Sept. 28, 1937, in Zagreb. Croatian actress.

Ružička-Strozzi studied under the actor J. Freudenreich. She made her stage debut in Zagreb at the National Theater in 1868 and became known as the Slavic Sarah Bernhardt. Her repertoire included such tragic roles as Hermione in Racine’s Andromaque, the title role in Racine’s Phèdre, and the Mother in Vojnovič’s The Mother of the Jugowič es. She performed the title role in Anna Karenina, after the novel by L. N. Tolstoy, and the roles of Mara Bene in Vojnovic’s The Dubrovač Trilogy and Mrs. Alving in Ibsen’s Ghosts. Ružička-Strozzi was an actress of high artistic caliber.
