On northeastern border of WI, north of Green Bay; organized Feb 27, 1879 from Oconto County. Name Origin: For Marguerite Chevallier (1784-1865), a successful female fur trader, also known as Marinette, a combined form of Marie Antoinette (1755-93), then Queen of France.
