Markiewicz, Constance Georgine, Countess (märkyā`vĭts), 1868–1927, Irish politician and patriot. A member of Sinn Féin Sinn Féin (shĭn fān) [Irish,=we, ourselves], Irish nationalist movement. ..... The daughter of an Irish baronet, she was married (1900) to a Polish count. In 1918 she was the first woman to be elected to the British House of Commons, but she never took her seat.
