Markov, Dmitrii Fedorovich
Born Oct. 23 (Nov. 5), 1913, in village of Preslav, present-day Primorskii Raion, Zaporozh’e Oblast. Soviet literary scholar, Slavist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966). Markov graduated from the department of philology at the University of Kharkov in 1936. Since 1969 he has been director of the Institute for Slavonic and Balkan Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His work as a Slavist dates from the end of the 1940’s. His doctoral dissertation appeared under the title The Paths of Development of Bulgarian Poetry in the First Quarter of the Twentieth Century (1954; separate publication, 1959). Makov’s chief works are devoted to Bulgarian literature (Bulgarian Literature of Our Time, 1969; From the History of Bulgarian Literature, 1973), and the study of the patterns in the literary process of the 20th century among the Western and Southern Slavs (The Genesis of Socialist Realism, 1970; Dimitrov Prize, 1972). A number of his works have been translated into Bulgarian, German, Slovak, and other languages. Markov is a foreign member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1968). He has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and the Bulgarian Order of Cyril and Methodius First Class.
