Marrast, Armand 

Born June 5, 1801, in St. Gaudens, Haute-Garonne Department; died Mar. 10, 1852, in Paris. French politician.

Marrast was involved in the Revolution of 1830 and in the French republican movement of the 1830’s and 1840’s. He was the editor of the moderate republican newspaper Le National from 1841. After the Revolution of 1848 he was a member of the Provisional Government and from July 1848 to May 1849 the chairman of the Constituent Assembly. Marrast was a leader of the bourgeois counterrevolution that suppressed the June 1848 uprising of the Paris proletariat. In May 1849 he was defeated in an election to the Legislative Assembly, after which he left politics.
