Marsden, Samuel (märz`dən), 1764–1838, Anglican clergyman and chaplain of a convict colony in New Zealand. He introduced domestic animals (especially sheep) into New Zealand. As director of the first missionary settlement there in 1814, Marsden began a tradition of missionary protection of the Maori natives against the incursion of European settlers.
