Marseille-Rhône Canal

    0.03 sec.
Marseille-Rhône Canal

(Canal de Marseille au Rhone), a navigable canal in southern France between Marseille and Aries on the Rhône River. The Marseille-Rhône Canal was built to bypass unnavigable arms of the Rhône. It runs underground where it transects the L’Estaque ridge near Marseille (the 7.2-km Rove Tunnel). In the Marseille-Port-de-Bouc section, the canal is accessible to seagoing vessels; from Port-de-Bouc to Aries it can handle ships with a freight-carrying capacity of up to 600 tons. Total length of the canal is 81 km.
