Martin, Rudolf
Born July 1, 1864, in Zürich; died July 11, 1925, in Munich. German anthropologist. Martin was a professor at the universities of Zurich (1899-1911) and Munich (from 1917). He created the modern methods of anthropological research, expanding and improving the earlier methods of P. Broca. Martin’s technique of measuring the skull, bones, and the human body as a whole and the instruments developed by him were universally accepted. His anthropological studies of the indigenous population of Tierra del Fuego (1893) and the Malays of the Malacca Peninsula (1905) are well known.
