Martin, Thomas Staples (1847–1919) U.S. senator; born in Scottsville, Va. Leader of the Democratic machine in Virginia, he served in the U.S. Senate (1895–1919), where he became chairman of the Committee on Appropriations during World War I. He was renowned for his honesty, hard work, and conservatism.
