On the central southern border of MN, southwest of Mankato; established May 23, 1857 (prior to statehood) from Faribault County. Name Origin: Either for Henry Martin (1829-1908), CT speculator with large holdings in the area, or for Morgan Lewis Martin (1805-87), U.S. representative from WI Territory who introduced the bill for the organization of the Territory of MN.

Area (sq mi): 729.56 (land 709.34; water 20.21). Pop per sq mi: 29.60.
