Martínez, Luis A.
Born June 23, 1869, in Ambato; died there 1909. Ecuadorian writer. Fought in the civil war of 1895. MartÍnez’s Absurdities and Caricatures (1903) is a collection of short stories and essays about life in the Ecuadorian provinces. His novel Toward the Shore (1904), which is largely autobiographical, is devoted to the struggle between the liberals and feudalistic Catholic reactionism in Ecuador. The first part of the book presents a somber picture of the caste mores of the Ecuadorian capital; the second part describes life on the tropical coast. This novel marked the beginning of realism in Ecuadorian prose. WORKSIn Russian translation:K beregu. Introduction by S. Mamontov. Moscow, 1966. REFERENCESCarrión, B.
