Martínez Barrio, Diego
Born Nov. 25, 1883, in Seville; died Jan. 1, 1962, in Paris. Spanish politician, a leader of the bourgeois republicans in the Revolution of 1931-39. Martinez Barrio was minister of transportation in the Provisional Government of the republic (from April to December 1931). He was prime minister in 1933 and for one day, July 18, in 1936. Martinez Barrio was a member of the Radical Republican Party until 1934; in that year he founded the Republican Union, which joined the Popular Front when it was formed in January 1936. Chairman of the Cortes in 1936-39, Martinez Barrio became provisional president of the republican government-in-exile in 1945. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
