Martínez Estrada, Ezequiel 

Born Sept. 14, 1895, in San Jose de la Esquina, province of Santa Fe; died Nov. 4, 1964, in Buenos Aires. Argentine writer. Professor of literature at the universities of La Plata (1924-46) and Bahia Blanca (from 1956). President of the Writers’ Union of Argentina (1944-45).

MartÍnez Estrada published the poetry collections Gold and Stone (1918), Motifs of the Sky (1924), and Argentina (1927). In the 1930’s he turned to social commentary and literary criticism. His best-known essay, Radiography of the Pampas (1933), presents a highly pessimistic, literary analysis of life in Argentina. Martinez Estrada wrote a number of books on Argentine cultural figures, such as Sarmiento (1946), Panorama of Literature (1946), The Death and Transfiguration of Martin Fierro (1947), which is about the poetry of J. Hernandez, The Wonderful World of Guillermo Hudson (1951), and Brother Quiroga (1957). Martinez Estrada spent his last years in Cuba.
