Martins Ferry, city (1990 pop. 7,990), Belmont co., E Ohio, on the Ohio River opposite Wheeling, W.Va.; settled 1780, inc. as a city 1885. It was formerly an industrial coal-mining and steel-manufacturing city. The novelist William Dean Howells Howells, William Dean, 1837–1920, American novelist, critic, and editor, b. Martins Ferry, Ohio. Both in his own novels and in his critical writing, Howells was a champion of realism in American literature.

 was born in Martins Ferry. In Walnut Grove Cemetery are the graves of Elizabeth (Betty) and Ebenezer Zane Zane, Ebenezer, 1747–1811, American pioneer and land speculator, b. near what is now Moorefield, W.Va. (then Virginia). With his brothers Silas and Jonathan, he went west in 1769 and established the settlement at Wheeling, of which he became the leader.
