Martinsville, city (1990 pop. 16,162), seat of Henry co., S Va., in the Blue Ridge foothills near the N.C. line; founded 1793, inc. as a city 1928. Tobacco is processed, and furniture, prefabricated homes, textiles, clothing, wood and plastic products, machinery, chemicals, and transportation equipment are manufactured.

In southern VA, 32 mi. west of Danville. Founded 1791; incorporated as a town in 1873; as a city in 1928. Serves as county seat for Henry County. Name Origin: For Gen. Joseph Martin (1740-1808), pioneer settler and army officer who represented the county in the General Assembly when the town was established.

Area (sq mi): 11.01 (land 10.96; water 0.05). Pop per sq mi: 1361.80.
Pop 2005: 14,925. State rank: 95. Pop change: 2000-20005 -3.20%; 1990-2000 -4.60%. Pop 2000: 15,416 (White 54.10%; Black or African American 42.50%; Hispanic or Latino 2.30%; Asian 0.50%; Other 1.60%). Foreign born: 2.70%. Median age: 40.80.
Income 2000: per capita $17,251; median household $27,441; Pop below poverty level: 19.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,574-$23,309.
