HanumanMonkey god of Hindu mythology, a central figure in the Ramayana. He was a guardian spirit, the offspring of a nymph and the wind god. His great heroic exploit was recovering Rama's wife, Sita, from captivity by the demon Ravana. Hanuman also flew to the Himalayas and carried back a mountain of medicinal herbs to cure Rama's grievously wounded brother Laksmana. Worshiped in the form of a monkey, he is an important deity because of his strength and his faithfulness to Rama. The body of the males is 60–70 cm long, with a 90–100 cm tail; the weight averages 9–11 kg. The fur is gray-brown or yellow-brown, with lighter hair around the face. The face, hands, and feet are black. The hanuman is founü in Hindustan, Kashmir, Nepal, southern Tibet, Sikkim, Assam, and Ceylon. During the day it spends much of its time on the ground, although it moves about very adroitly through the crowns of trees and can jump as far as 4–12 m. Its food is made up chiefly of leaves and fruits. Sometimes the animal damages crop plantations. In India the hanuman is considered a sacred animal. M. F.
