Some of the major areas relate to observation techniques and instrumentation, including remote-sensing from satellites and equipment, such as Doppler radars, automated sounding and measuring systems over land, rivers, lakes and seas; telecommunications, including the Internet; massively parallel computing systems and low-cost mainframe computers and workstations; and data handling and storage systems. has taken a giant step toward massively parallel computing with the installation of a 512-processor SGI Origin 3800 supercomputer. The machine, which crunches numbers with a technique called massively parallel computing, was built by connecting thousands of the same kind of Intel Pentium Pro microchips found in standard computers. |
