Location: Offshore barrier island, 11 water miles from Port O'Connor.
Facilities: Primitive camp, picnic areas, beach, hiking trails.
Activities: Camping, boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, bicycling, beachcombing, nature study, hunting (with restrictions), guided hikes.
Special Features: The island, which protects the mainland from the tidal and wave action of the open Gulf, is a haven for wildlife. Nineteen species on state or federal endangered lists live here, including the whooping crane, Alpomado falcon, and brown pelican. A lighthouse dating from 1852 still stands at the north end of the island.
