Matara 

a city and port on the southern coast of Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Population, 36,000 (1968). Transportation junction; commercial and handicrafts center. Nearby, coconuts and spices are grown and graphite and precious stones (sapphires, rubies, and aquamarines) are mined.
