parameter(1) Any value passed to a program by the user or by another program in order to customize the program for a particular purpose. A parameter may be anything; for example, a file name, a coordinate, a range of values, a money amount or a code of some kind. Parameters may be required as in parameter-driven software (see below) or they may be optional. Parameters are often entered as a series of values following the program name when the program is loaded.

parameter 1. one of a number of auxiliary variables in terms of which all the variables in an implicit functional relationship can be explicitly expressed 2. a variable whose behaviour is not being considered and which may for present purposes be regarded as a constant, as y in the partial derivative ∂f(x,y)/∂x

In a book-length mathematical argument that has been percolating through the set theory community for the last few years, Woodin has proved--apart from one missing piece that must still be filled in--that elegant axioms do exist and, crucially, that every elegant axiom would make the continuum hypothesis false. I envisioned that in the course of their presentations of solutions the participants would engage in mathematical arguments as they assessed their own methods in the presence of more or less sophisticated mathematical models presented by their colleagues. Thorne and Ulvi Yurtsever of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena present mathematical arguments supporting the notion that the presence of a wormhole could locally scramble the relationship between cause and effect. |
