Mathews, John Joseph (c. 1894–1979) writer; born in Pawhuska, Okla. An Osage Indian, he studied at the University of Oklahoma (B.A. 1920) and Oxford (B.A. 1923). He lived in Pawhuska much of his life, and is noted for his historical and biographical texts about the life of the Osage Indians, as in Wah 'Kon-Tah: The Osage and the White Man's Road (1932).
