Matiushkin, Fedor Fedorovich
Born July 10 (21), 1799, in Stuttgart; died Sept. 16 (28), 1872, in St. Petersburg. Russian sailor; admiral (1867). Close friend of A. S. Pushkin. Matiushkin graduated from the Tsarskoe Selo Lycée in 1817. In 1817-19, after enlisting in the navy, he took part in V. M. Golovnin’s voyage around the world aboard the sloop Kamchatka. In 1820-24 he was a member of the arctic expedition of F. P. Wrangel, with whom he collaborated on the exploration and mapping of Chetyrekhstolbovoi Island; he independently explored the considerable expanse of tundra to the east of Kolyma and gathered valuable ethnographic materials. In 1825-27 he sailed on F. P. Wrangel’s around-the-world voyage aboard the sloop Krotkii. In 1828 and 1829 he commanded various warships in the Russo-Turkish War. He served in the Black Sea Fleet in 1835 and in the Baltic Fleet in 1850-51. From 1852 he occupied high admiralty posts in the Naval Department, and in 1858 he became president of the Naval Scientific Committee. He became a senator in 1861.
