Mato Grosso (mä`t grô`s) [Port.,=thick forest], state (1996 pop. 2,227,983), 348,038 sq mi (901,420 sq km), central and W Brazil. The capital is Cuiabá Cuiabá , city (1996 pop. 443,101), capital of Mato Grosso state, SW Brazil, at the head of navigation on the Cuiabá River. Founded in the gold rush of the early 18th cent., it has been the state capital since 1818.

Mato Grosso

State (pop., 2003 est.: 2,651,335), southwestern Brazil. It covers an area of 348,788 sq mi (903,358 sq km), and its capital is Cuiabá. It is bounded by Bolivia on the southwest and west. Cuiabá was founded in 1719 after gold was discovered nearby. In 1748 Mato Grosso became an independent captaincy, in 1822 a province of the empire, and in 1889 a state of the federal union. One of the few great frontier regions still in existence, it consists of grassland, dense forest, and highland plains, with some areas that remain largely unexplored.

Mato Grosso 

a state in western Brazil, in the Brazilian Highlands. Area, 1,231,500 sq km; population, 1,623,600(1970). The administrative center is Cuiabá. In the north is the tropical rain forest of the Amazon; in the central part and the south are sparse forests and savannas. The main business is cattle raising. Forest products are collected, and there is consumer agriculture (rice, corn, manioc, and sugarcane). Manganese and iron ores are mined near the city of Corumbá. Textile and food enterprises are found in the state. The main centers are Cuiabá, Corumbá, and Campo Grande.


Mato Grosso 

a plateau in the northwestern Brazilian Highlands, between the upper courses of the Tapajós, Xingú, and Paraguay rivers. Average elevations, 500-700 m; maximum elevation, 893 m. Mato Grosso is composed primarily of Paleozoic sandstone which forms steep scarps (chapadas). The climate is subequatorial, hot, and, in the summer, humid. The plateau is covered with low-tree savannas (campos cerrados).

I read about him in "Colonel Fawcett's Expedition," in which he told of his expedition to Brazil's Matto Grosso and of his encounters with giant anaconda snakes, two nosed dogs and flesh eating piranha fish.
The letters paint a colourful picture of his adventures in the vast Matto Grosso plateau, facing the hazards of crocodiles, snakes and "savages".
Sales of the company's Suvinil and Glasurit brands in Matto Grosso state, in the Central West, have doubled over the past year or so, and sales in North Eastern states like Pernambuco also are rising rapidly for BASF.
