Matulis, Iuozas Iuozovich
Born Mar. 7 (19), 1899, in Tatkonys, present-day Kupiškis Raion, Lithuanian SSR. Soviet physical chemist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946), academician (1941) and president (since 1946) of the Academy of Sciences of the Lithuanian SSR. Hero of Socialist Labor (1965). Member of the CPSU since 1950. Matulis graduated from the University of Kaunas in 1929. Since 1956 he has been director of the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of the Academy of Sciences of the Lithuanian SSR. His main works are devoted to photochemistry, electrochemistry, the theory of metal electroplating, and the formulation of scientific principles involved in the manufacture of coatings with predetermined properties. He is the author of a basic course in colloid chemistry and a handbook of physical chemistry (Kaunas, 1947 and 1948). He has been awarded four Orders of Lenin, three other orders, and medals.
