Max Theodor Felix von . 1879--1960, German physicist. He pioneered the technique of measuring the wavelengths of X-rays by their diffraction by crystals and contributed to the theory of relativity: Nobel prize for physics 1914

In 1912, Max von Laue discovers the diffraction of x-rays by crystals.
Ewald's answer was yes, whereupon Max von Laue suggested an experiment that would direct a beam of x-rays at a crystal.
