throughput

the quantity of raw material or information processed or communicated in a given period, esp by a computer

throughput

[′thrü‚pu̇t]
(chemical engineering)
The volume of feedstock charged to a process equipment unit during a specified time.
(communications)
A measure of the effective rate of transmission of data by a communications system.
(computer science)
The productivity of a data-processing system, as expressed in computing work per minute or hour.
(mining engineering)
The quantity of ore or other material passed through a mill or a section of a mill in a given time or at a given rate.

throughput

(1)
The rate at which a processor can work expressed in instructions per second or jobs per hour or some other unit of performance.

throughput

The amount of work performed by a computer within a given time. It is a combination of internal processing speed (32-bit vs. 64-bit, etc.), peripheral speeds (I/O) and the efficiency of the operating system, other system software and applications all working together. Transactions processed per second (TPS) is one metric commonly used to gauge throughput. See 32-bit computing and 64-bit computing.
