In northeastern OK, east of Tulsa; organized Nov 16, 1907 from Indian lands. Name Origin: For Chief Samuel Houston Mayes (1845-1927), principal leader of the Cherokee Nation, also a prominent merchant and rancher.

Area (sq mi): 683.51 (land 656.14; water 27.37). Pop per sq mi: 60.20.
Pop 2005: 39,471. State rank: 24. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.90%; 1990-2000 15.00%. Pop 2000: 38,369 (White 71.30%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 1.90%; Asian 0.30%; Other 27.20%). Foreign born: 1.00%. Median age: 37.20.
