Mazia, Daniel

(born Dec. 18, 1912, Scranton, Pa., U.S.—died June 9, 1996, Monterey, Calif.) U.S. cell biologist. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. His research focused on various aspects of cell reproduction, including mitosis and regulation. He is best known for isolating the structure responsible for cell division, research that he carried out with Katsuma Dan (1905?–96) in 1951.

Mazia, Daniel (1912–  ) cell biologist; born in Scranton, Pa. He taught at the University of Missouri (1938–50), where he performed research on the enzymatic digestion of chromosomes and the role of the nucleus in cell physiology. He moved to the University of California: Berkeley (1951–79), concurrently serving the marine biology laboratory at Woods Hole, Mass. (1950–58). With Katsuma Dan, he isolated the "major protein" of the mitotic microtubules (1952). Mazia joined Stanford (1979), continuing his research on cellular biochemistry. He made significant advances in cellular ion dynamics, chromosome chemistry, and centrosome function.
