Mazlumov, Avedikt Luk’ianovich 

Born Nov. 30 (Dec. 12), 1896, in Simferopol’; died Sept. 30, 1972, in Moscow. Soviet biologist; breeder of sugar beets; academician of the V. I. Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences in 1956; Hero of Socialist Labor (1965).

Mazlumov graduated from the Voronezh Agricultural Institute in 1923. In 1922 he began to work at the Ramon’ Experimental Breeding Station (Voronezh Oblast), which in 1959 became the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Sugar Beets and Sugar. (From 1933 to 1964 he was chief of the division of selection and genetics of sugar beets, and from 1967 scientific consultant.) Mazlumov by himself and with other breeders developed 52 varieties and hybrids of sugar beets; of these 41 had been acclimatized by 1972. He was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR at the sixth convocation. He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1946 and 1952 and the Lenin Prize in 1965. He was made an honorary academician of the Czechoslovak Academy of Agricultural Sciences in 1960. He was awarded two Orders of Lenin, three other orders, and various medals.
