Mazurenko, Aleksei Efimovich 

Born June 7 (20), 1917, in the village of Leninlka, now in Ustinovka Raion, Kirovo-grad Oblast. Major general of aviation (1962); twice Hero of the Soviet Union (Oct. 23, 1942, and Nov. 5 1944). Member of the CPSU since 1942.

Mazurenko has been in the Soviet Army since 1938. He graduated from the Naval Aviation College in 1940, the Higher Officers’ Tactical Flight Courses in 1949, and the Naval Academy in 1952. In the Great Patriotic War (1941-45) he served in the aviation of the Baltic Fleet and commanded the 7th Assault Aviation Regiment in 1944 and 1945. Mazurenko made about 300 combat flights and personally sank eight enemy ships and 22 in group combat. Since the war he has held command positions in the armed forces and in higher military schools of the navy. Mazurenko has been awarded the Order of Lenin, three Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Ushakov Second Class, the Order of the Patriotic War First Class, the Order of the Red Star, and various medals. A bust of Mazurenko has been erected in the settlement of Ustinovka, Kirovograd Oblast, Ukrainian SSR.
