Mazzacurati, Marino

Born July 22, 1907, in Galliera, Emilia-Romagna; died Sept. 18, 1969, in Paris. Italian sculptor.

From 1927 to 1931, Mazzacurati studied at the Academy of Arts in Rome and with the sculptor A. Martini. He was influenced by A. Rodin. In the postwar years, aligning himself with the realistic movement in Italian art, he created his best works—the memorials to the heroes of the resistance that are located in Parma (bronze, 1955, jointly with the architect G. Lusignoli), Naples (bronze, 1966-69), and other cities. His works are often characterized by expressive gestures and complex poses. He uses to good effect the picturesque quality of the fragmented planes of his figures’ drapery.
